Scope Creep in E-Learning Projects
Overview
This short animated video aims to explain what is scope creep in e-learning projects. I created this video as a learning component for a training program on how to manage unwanted expansion of the project scope, also known as scope creep.
Audience: Employees at an e-learning agency, including new and senior instructional designers, and project managers, etc
Responsibilities: Designer
Tools Used: Vyond, Camtasia
Problem and Solution
ELMS is a fictitious e-Learning agency that provides digital learning solutions and customized corporate training services. Recently the managements received several complaints from both their customers and instructional design team regarding project delivery delay. It raised their concerns on potential employee frustration, potential loss of clients, and continued struggles during the project development process and delay for project delivery. After investigating the causes for this project delay issue, I determined that a training course on how to manage unwanted expansion of the project scope (aka scope creep) for their design team is needed.
Therefore, I proposed a scenario-based E-Learning module that helps learners retain more information by providing them opportunities to connect course concepts to real-world applications. A course about project scope creep should exist because clients’ constant request of changes to the project scope are not well managed currently. As a result, scope creep runs amok and bring in additional work which causes delays in project development and delivery.
Process
Guided by the ADDIE model, I started with SME interviews to identify the problem and needs. I then used Bloom’s Taxonomy to write learning objectives that focus on defining, interpreting, and responding when setting goals. I also employed Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction to create a learning experience that includes role-plays, case studies, interactive practice, corrective feedback, and multimedia.
This one minute animated video is part of the e-learning course and aims to explain to learners that what scope creep is, especially in the instructional design field. I designed and developed this video with Vyond and Camtasia.
